Dieter Rams's "10 Principles for Good Design" was created when he asked himself the question, "is my design good design?". As good design cannot be measured in a finite way, he set about expressing the ten most important principles for what he considered was good design.
These principles have been applied to a variety of different design disciplines, although they were primarily for industrial/product design. These principles are very important to know, although I believe that they're not a set of rules, and everyone must remember to keep an open-mind whilst designing.
